Career Advice and Resume Preparation

Your resume is the instrument used to make a compelling and memorable first impression. It is important to produce a resume that accurately reflects your skills, detailed career history and relevant personal characteristics. The information needs to be pertinent to a prospective employer and highlight your relevant skills applicable to the position in question.

Resume Preparation

  • Present your resume as professionally as possible, on high quality paper.
  • Retain consistent formatting (including fonts and spacing) and style of writing and throughout the document.
  • Keep the length to two or three pages (most people don't have time to read a novel! But include enough information so the reader can still make an informed decision on your suitability).
  • Chart your work history in reverse chronological order, commencing with your most recent position.
  • Prepare your resume with the aim of making a well-aimed impact.
  • Ensure that your headings are clear.
  • Use bullet points for clarity if necessary.
  • Always double check your spelling and grammar (you would be surprised how many resumes don't make it because of this!).
  • Check with us or a friend and get other views on the layout and content of your resume.
  • Always send your resume with a brief covering letter.
  • Always ensure the contact name of the company is correct. If unsure, always check.
  • Remember to sign and date your letter of application.

Be sure to avoid:

  • Leaving unexplained gaps of work history.
  • Exaggerating your skills or experience - it will be revealed.
  • Including irrelevant details, and don't focus too much on your interests or hobbies.
  • Attaching photographs of any sort.
  • Not including enough about your duties and responsibilities in each position.
  • Keep the text of a resume single-sided, rather than double-sided.
