A successful interview

You have been successful in the first steps to obtain an interview. Your resume, experience and skills have impressed the client. Within your interview, it is now up to you to express to the interviewer why you are the best person for that job.

Some helpful reminders...

  • Be relaxed and try to be yourself at the interview.
  • Always be on time. You will leave the wrong impression if you are running late for an interview.
  • Have a smile, and a positive attitude.
  • Always maintain eye contact and if you wish, shake hands with the person interviewing you.
  • Always refer to them by name.
  • Don't slouch - show interest in your surroundings and what the person is saying to you.
  • Always be clear and precise in your answers.
  • If there is a part of the position that you feel is your weakness, do not be afraid to talk about it.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Do not give your last, or any employer, a bad wrap. This is never good form.
  • Always make sure you and your Consultant know what salary you have been put forward for.

Following are a few examples of frequently asked questions at interviews.

  • Tell me a little bit about yourself?
  • Do you know anything about our firm?
  • Why do you think you would like to work here?
  • Why do you wish to leave your current position?
  • Can you give me an example of how you handle pressure?
  • Can you give me an example of how you used your initiative in your current position?
  • How effectively do you work in a team environment?
  • Do you have the ability to work autonomously?
  • Can you give me an example of how you prioritise your workload?
  • What would you say your colleagues thought of you?
  • Do you get along well with your supervisors?
  • What do you believe are your strength and weaknesses?
  • Expect more competency-based questions.

Don't forget, you are also allowed to ask questions. For example:

  • How many people would I be working for?
  • Who would I be reporting to?
  • Why has the vacancy come about?
  • Will there be a training period?
  • Is there ongoing training?

When the interview is over, thank the interviewer for their time. Always leave the interviewer with a positive impression of yourself.

Contact your consultant after the interview with your initial thoughts and reactions from the interview. Your consultant will contact the company and get feedback for you as soon as possible.
